Scientifical merits.
Short Research Profile. My research training started in 1970 with the subject Neurophysiology on Spinal Neurons, one year after my entrance to the Medical School at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, under the tutorage of Professor Sten Skoglund (deceased 1971), Dept. of Anatomy.
In 1971 I had the oppurtunity of finding Prof. C.-H. Berthold, also Dept. of Anatomy, as a tutor in Ultrastructural Research on Peripheral Nerves. In unison with medical studies, I trained in the electron microscopic techniques. I was a full time research associate from 1975 - 1982 when I graduated Ph.D. in Medicine on a thesis named ”An Ultrastructural morphomteric analysis of the node of Ranvier peripheral myelinared nerve fibres of the adult cat”. Important parts of the research were: 1) Control of preparatory artefacts (qualitative and quantitative) in the procedure of preservation of nerve tissue for electron microscopy, i.e. chemical fixation, ultra-thin sectioning, 2) To perform consecutive serial ultra-thin sectioning (up to 5-10,000 sections) without losing more than a few sections and obtain them with an even and decided section thickness, 3) 3D-reconstruction with morphometric analyses, 4) Comparison between obtained structural information and relevant neurophysiology.
From the late ´70s, when Prof. Berthold moved to a position in Göteborg, I was assistant tutor to a couple of junior research associates in the research group, until I myself moved to a post graduate position in Göteborg.
In 1985 I was appointed a position as Associate Professor in Anatomy in 1985.
From the very start in 1985 I was involved with the founding of Mednet, the Computer Laboratory of the Medical Faculty. My research was still basically in the field of Neuromorphology but expanded to the field “brain cortex” and the new techniques used at Mednet, eg. image analysis and computer assisted 3D-recontruction/visualization. During these years and to the present several researchers from the faculty, as well as from our own research group, found tutorage in my person.
It was from 1985 that I started my second major field of research, i.e. Medical Informatics. (See, also, teaching activities.) Starting in 1991, I initiated a national investigation on the subject ”What is Medical Informatics?” which led to a national consensus in 1994.
In 1991 I was appointed lecturer pro tem in Medical Informatics on a part-time basis until 1994 when I had a full time position pro tem in this subject. In 1996, after application and under conditions of competition, I was appointed the full-time position in Medical Informatics. This year I also became Director and chairman of the board of Mednet. During the ´90s I have expanded the research field to cover a broader spectrum of research areas under the shield of the subject Medical Informatics, eg. multimedia, communication in Health Care systems, Virtual Reality, Haptic Interfaces (See, Ongoing major Projects).

Teaching merits.
Own education experiences.
My academic teaching experiences began in 1970 at the Department of Anatomy, Karolinska Institute. Since then I have been teaching various health care students (and others), eg. those studying to become nurses, doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, laboratory technicians, as well as personnel in continuing education, research students, etc. I have taught anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and ergonomics, as well as research related subjects. For the last ten years I have also been teaching Medical informatics. I have used various methods for education, eg. lectures, group work, dissections, laborations, computer instructions, problem based education, and so on …
I have been together with students in teaching situations for approximately >50% of my time during the last 38 years, except for the five years I was a medical student myself, at which time teaching perhaps occupied me to 20%.

I have developed the integrated course in brain anatomy, histology and physiology for medical students during my period as director for the course in ´86-´95.
I am the Medical Faculty representative in The National Council for the Renewal of Undergraduate Education.

In ´96 I was a finalist in EASA (European Academic Software Award) in Klagenfurt with a program named ”3D Brain”. In ´98 I was a judges in the same contest in Oxford.
